Often called the 'Poor Man's Discus,' the Uaru is a large, triangular-shaped cichlid with a peaceful temperament for its size. They are social fish that should be kept in groups and are known for their strong herbivorous tendencies. They require a large tank with soft, acidic water and plenty of vegetable matter in their diet.

Size the aquarium to Uaru's adult size and activity level. Use robust décor and sight breaks so each fish can hold its own space.
Water parameters
Keep pH 5.5–7 and 26–30°C. Stable parameters matter more than chasing perfect numbers; acclimate new arrivals slowly.
Feeding
Herbivore. Feed small amounts it clears in a couple of minutes, and vary the diet.
Behaviour
Semi-aggressive. Keep it in a group for natural behaviour.
