More fish are lost in the first month than in all the months after it, and almost always to the same thing: ammonia in a filter that has not matured yet. Prime removes chlorine and chloramine from tap water and detoxifies ammonia while the bacteria establish, which buys the tank time. Stability supplies those bacteria and keeps supplying them through the fortnight where a new filter is most likely to stall. The Ammonia Alert badge sits inside the glass and changes colour as free ammonia rises, so a problem is visible the day it starts rather than the day a fish is on the bottom. Add livestock slowly, feed less than feels right, and do not clean the filter during the first month. Cycling cannot be rushed, but it can be watched.
