What to know before you buy.
Peacock Cichlids are a group of colorful African cichlids where males display spectacular shades of blue, red, and yellow. They are generally more peaceful than Mbuna and prefer a mix of sandy areas and rockwork. There are many different species and color morphs available, each with its own unique beauty.
Key traits
Keeping Peacock Cichlid healthy in a South African setup.
Size the aquarium to Peacock Cichlid's adult size and activity level. Use robust décor and sight breaks so each fish can hold its own space.
Keep pH 7.8–8.6 and 24–28°C. Stable parameters matter more than chasing perfect numbers; acclimate new arrivals slowly.
Carnivore. Feed small amounts it clears in a couple of minutes, and vary the diet.
Semi-aggressive. Watch it at feeding time and at lights-out to see its real temperament in your tank.
Choose robust tankmates of similar size, and nothing small enough to be eaten. Add Peacock Cichlid last so territories reset.
Breeding success with Peacock Cichlid depends on the line and water chemistry; ask your shop about proven pairs.
Rift Lake cichlids want hard, alkaline water — most SA tap water is softer than that.
