About This Species
Chalice Coral is a common name for a group of encrusting and plating Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals, primarily from the *Echinophyllia* and *Oxypora* genera. They are famous for their stunning, neon-colored 'eyes' (polyps) set against a contrasting base color, creating 'designer' patterns. They are very aggressive and have a powerful sting, both from sweeper tentacles and their fleshy tissue. They prefer low to moderate light and flow. An interesting fact is their 'melt-in-your-hand' fragility; the fleshy tissue can easily be damaged during handling, requiring great care.
