Overview
What to know before you buy.
Similar to Blue Dreams but often with a slightly lighter, more electric blue hue, Blue Velvet shrimp are another stunning Neocaridina morph. They are hardy, breed readily, and are excellent for adding a cool, vibrant color to a community or species-only tank. Their care is straightforward, making them great for beginners.
Key traits
Care guide
Keeping Blue Velvet Shrimp healthy in a South African setup.
Tank setup
Add it only to a fully cycled, mature tank: invertebrates tolerate ammonia and nitrite far worse than fish. Moss, leaf litter and established biofilm give shrimp grazing and cover, especially after a moult.
Water parameters
Keep pH 6.5–8 and 18–28°C. Never use copper: most fish medications and some plant fertilisers contain it and it kills invertebrates. Drip-acclimate over at least an hour.
Feeding
Omnivore. Remove uneaten food within a few hours so it doesn't foul the water.
Behaviour
It hides after moulting while the new shell hardens: leave the old shell in the tank, it eats it back for minerals.
Tankmates
Many fish eat shrimp, especially babies. Keep it with small, peaceful fish, or on its own.
Breeding
Blue Velvet Shrimp breeds readily in a stable, predator-free tank.
Keeping shrimp?
Shrimp forgive less than fish do — stable hardness and clean water are the whole game.
