    Overview

What to know before you buy.

Highly valued for their appetite for the pest anemone Aiptasia, Peppermint Shrimp are a functional and attractive member of a reef tank's clean-up crew. They have a mostly transparent body covered in red stripes. While generally reef-safe, they may occasionally nip at soft corals or steal food if not well-fed.

    Care guide

Everything you need to keep Peppermint Shrimp healthy in a South African setup.

    Tank setupWater parametersFeedingBehaviourTankmatesBreeding

    Tank setup

Size the aquarium to Peppermint Shrimp's adult size and activity level. Match décor to natural behaviour — plants, rockwork, or open swimming room as needed.

    Water parameters

Keep pH 8.1–8.4 and 22–28°C. Stable parameters matter more than chasing perfect numbers — acclimate new arrivals slowly.

    Feeding

Peppermint Shrimp is an omnivore. Feed a varied diet appropriate for invertebrates — quality flakes, pellets, or frozen foods sized to the mouth.

    Behaviour

Peppermint Shrimp is generally peaceful. Observe during feeding and at lights-out for true temperament.

    Tankmates

Pair with similarly sized peaceful tankmates in invertebrates. Avoid fin-nippers or species that outgrow this fish.

    Breeding

Breeding notes for Peppermint Shrimp vary by line and water chemistry — ask your local shop about proven pairs in SA.

    Keeping shrimp?

Shrimp forgive less than fish do — stable hardness and clean water are the whole game.
