All problemsStarting a new tank
More fish are lost in the first month than in all the months after — almost always to ammonia in a filter that has not matured yet.
What actually helps
- Treat every drop of tap water with a conditioner before it meets fish — chlorine and chloramine damage gills instantly.
- Seed the filter with bacteria and give it two to four weeks to mature; adding livestock slowly matters more than any product.
- Watch free ammonia with a badge or test kit so you can see a problem the day it starts, not the day a fish is on the bottom.
- Feed lightly and do not clean the filter media during the first month — the bacteria live there.
