One of the most iconic Caridina shrimp, the Crystal Red features striking red and white bands. They are more sensitive than Neocaridina, requiring soft, acidic water and stable conditions. Their beauty makes them a rewarding challenge for intermediate hobbyists.

Keeping Crystal Red Shrimp healthy in a South African setup.
Tank setup
Add it only to a fully cycled, mature tank: invertebrates tolerate ammonia and nitrite far worse than fish. Moss, leaf litter and established biofilm give shrimp grazing and cover, especially after a moult.
Water parameters
Keep pH 5.8–6.8 and 20–23°C. Never use copper: most fish medications and some plant fertilisers contain it and it kills invertebrates. Drip-acclimate over at least an hour.
Feeding
Omnivore. Remove uneaten food within a few hours so it doesn't foul the water.
Behaviour
It hides after moulting while the new shell hardens: leave the old shell in the tank, it eats it back for minerals.
Tankmates
Many fish eat shrimp, especially babies. Keep it with small, peaceful fish, or on its own.
Breeding
Crystal Red Shrimp breeds readily in a stable, predator-free tank.
