    Overview

What to know before you buy.

The Veiltail is a graceful fancy goldfish with a modified Ryukin body shape and a very long, flowing double tail that should not be forked. Their long fins are delicate and susceptible to damage and fin rot, requiring pristine water conditions. They are slow swimmers and should be housed with other gentle fancy varieties.

    Care guide

Everything you need to keep Veiltail Goldfish healthy in a South African setup.

    Tank setup

Size the aquarium to Veiltail Goldfish's adult size and activity level. Match décor to natural behaviour — plants, rockwork, or open swimming room as needed.

    Water parameters

Keep pH 6.5–8 and 18–23°C. Stable parameters matter more than chasing perfect numbers — acclimate new arrivals slowly.

    Feeding

Veiltail Goldfish is an omnivore. Feed a varied diet appropriate for freshwater fish — quality flakes, pellets, or frozen foods sized to the mouth.

    Behaviour

Veiltail Goldfish is generally peaceful. Observe during feeding and at lights-out for true temperament.

    Tankmates

Pair with similarly sized peaceful tankmates in freshwater fish. Avoid fin-nippers or species that outgrow this fish.

    Breeding

Breeding notes for Veiltail Goldfish vary by line and water chemistry — ask your local shop about proven pairs in SA.

    Keeping goldfish?

Goldfish produce more waste per centimetre than almost anything else in the hobby.
