What to know before you buy.
Shubunkin are a hardy, single-tailed goldfish variety known for their calico-patterned, nacreous scales. Their coloration is a mix of red, white, black, blue, and orange. Like other single-tailed varieties, they are active swimmers that grow large and are best suited for ponds or very large tanks.
Key traits
Keeping Shubunkin healthy in a South African setup.
Size the aquarium to Shubunkin's adult size and activity level. Provide hiding spots and stable, well-filtered water; it suits a community setup.
Keep pH 6.5–8 and 18–24°C. Stable parameters matter more than chasing perfect numbers; acclimate new arrivals slowly.
Omnivore. Feed small amounts it clears in a couple of minutes, and vary the diet.
Peaceful. Keep it in a group for natural behaviour.
Choose tankmates of similar size and temperament with the same water needs. Avoid fin-nippers and anything large enough to eat it.
Breeding success with Shubunkin depends on the line and water chemistry; ask your shop about proven pairs.
Goldfish produce more waste per centimetre than almost anything else in the hobby.
