About This Species
The Long-spine Urchin is a dramatic and highly effective algae-eater, recognized by its small, round body and exceptionally long, sharp, black spines. It is an herbivore that will graze on all types of algae, including tough turf algae and coralline. It is reef-safe in that it won't eat corals, but it is clumsy and can knock over unsecured frags. Its spines are venomous and can inflict a very painful wound, so extreme caution is required. An interesting fact is its 'eye,' a reddish, light-sensitive ring of tissue around its anus on top of its body, which allows it to detect and point its spines at passing shadows or threats.
