What to know before you buy.
A large sand-dwelling carpet anemone with an exceptionally strong grip and sting. It will catch fish that settle on it, so stock accordingly; needs a deep sand bed and intense light.
Keeping Haddon’s Carpet Anemone healthy in a South African setup.
An anemone chooses its own spot and will walk until it finds the light and flow it wants. Cover pump intakes and powerheads first, then let it settle.
Keep pH 8.1–8.4 and 24–27°C, with salinity around 1.025–1.026. Alkalinity, calcium and magnesium matter more than any single reading: keep them stable and test weekly.
Carnivore — meaty foods. Target-feed small meaty foods such as mysis once or twice a week.
Very strong sting; hosts clownfish. Many corals and anemones sting what they touch, some with sweeper tentacles that reach well beyond the colony at night. Leave clear space around Haddon’s Carpet Anemone as it grows.
Large angelfish and butterflyfish nip at corals and anemones; most reef fish, shrimp and snails leave it alone. Clownfish host in it.
Some anemones split on their own in a stable tank; they are not cut.
