About This Species
The Dolabella Sea Hare, or Wedge Sea Slug, is a legendary algae-eater, particularly effective against hair algae. It is a large, mottled green-and-brown slug with a soft, lumpy body. This invertebrate is an eating machine, capable of clearing a tank of algae in a short time. However, this is also its weakness; it will quickly starve to death once the algae is gone, and it rarely accepts supplemental foods. It is completely reef-safe. A fascinating defense mechanism is its ability to release a cloud of purple ink when stressed, similar to an octopus, which can be toxic in a closed system.
