    Overview

What to know before you buy.

The Blue Striped Mushroom is a common and attractive *Discosoma* mushroom. It typically has a blue or purple base with radiating, fluorescent blue or green stripes. They are very hardy, peaceful, and an excellent beginner coral. They thrive in low-light and low-flow environments, making them perfect for filling in the bottom of a reef tank. They reproduce by splitting and will form a dense, colorful carpet over time. An interesting fact is their hardiness; they are so successful that they are considered an invasive species in some parts of the Caribbean.

    Care guide

Everything you need to keep Blue Striped Mushroom healthy in a South African setup.

    Tank setup

A minimum 40L aquarium suits Blue Striped Mushroom. Provide hiding spots and stable water — this species thrives in a well-filtered community setup.

    Water parameters

Keep pH 8.1–8.4 and 24–28°C. Stable parameters matter more than chasing perfect numbers — acclimate new arrivals slowly.

    Feeding

Blue Striped Mushroom is carnivore. Feed a varied diet appropriate for invertebrates — quality flakes, pellets, or frozen foods sized to the mouth.

    Behaviour

Blue Striped Mushroom is generally peaceful. Observe during feeding and at lights-out for true temperament.

    Tankmates

Pair with similarly sized peaceful tankmates in invertebrates. Avoid fin-nippers or species that outgrow this fish.

    Breeding

Breeding notes for Blue Striped Mushroom vary by line and water chemistry — ask your local shop about proven pairs in SA.

    Keeping invertebrates?

Invertebrates read water quality more sensitively than fish — condition and test rather than guess.
