    Overview

What to know before you buy.

The Bird's Nest Coral is a classic Small Polyp Stony (SPS) coral, beloved for its delicate, thin, and densely interwoven branches that form a "nest-like" colony. It's often pink, green, or yellow, with sharp, pointed branch tips. It's considered a good "beginner" SPS, as it's slightly more forgiving than Acropora, but still needs high light and strong flow. It is semi-aggressive and can sting nearby corals. A fascinating fact is its fragility; the branches are very brittle and can be broken easily, which is also its primary method of fragmentation in the hobby.

    Tank setup

A minimum 100L aquarium suits Bird's Nest Coral. Match décor to natural behaviour — plants, rockwork, or open swimming room as needed.

    Water parameters

Keep pH 8.1–8.4 and 24–27°C. Stable parameters matter more than chasing perfect numbers — acclimate new arrivals slowly.

    Feeding

Bird's Nest Coral is carnivore. Feed a varied diet appropriate for invertebrates — quality flakes, pellets, or frozen foods sized to the mouth.

    Behaviour

Bird's Nest Coral is generally semi-aggressive. Observe during feeding and at lights-out for true temperament.

    Tankmates

Pair with similarly sized semi-aggressive tankmates in invertebrates. Avoid fin-nippers or species that outgrow this fish.

    Breeding

Breeding notes for Bird's Nest Coral vary by line and water chemistry — ask your local shop about proven pairs in SA.

    Keeping invertebrates?

Invertebrates read water quality more sensitively than fish — condition and test rather than guess.
