    Overview

What to know before you buy.

The Giant Gourami is the largest species in the gourami family and one of the most personable freshwater fish available. Native to Southeast Asia, adults can exceed 60 centimetres and live for over 20 years. Often described as the "labrador of the fish world," Giant Gouramis are famous for recognising their owners, accepting food from hand, and displaying individual personalities. Despite their size, they are generally peaceful and can coexist with other large, non-aggressive species.

    Tank setup

A minimum 1000L aquarium suits Giant Gourami. Provide hiding spots and stable water — this species thrives in a well-filtered community setup.

    Water parameters

Keep pH 6.5–8 and 22–30°C. Stable parameters matter more than chasing perfect numbers — acclimate new arrivals slowly.

    Feeding

Giant Gourami is omnivore. Feed a varied diet appropriate for monster fish — quality flakes, pellets, or frozen foods sized to the mouth.

    Behaviour

Giant Gourami is generally peaceful. Observe during feeding and at lights-out for true temperament.

    Tankmates

Pair with similarly sized peaceful tankmates in monster fish. Avoid fin-nippers or species that outgrow this fish.

    Breeding

Breeding notes for Giant Gourami vary by line and water chemistry — ask your local shop about proven pairs in SA.

    Keeping monster fish?

Big fish are big waste producers — oversized filtration and heavy-duty food carry the tank.
