    What actually helps

    1. Rinse mechanical media (sponges, floss) in removed tank water at every water change — never tap water, which kills the bacteria.
    2. Replace wool/floss regularly but carbon and chemical media on a schedule, not when they look dirty.
    3. Bio-media lasts years: it is the house of your cycle, so clean it gently and rarely.
    4. Match replacement media to the filter model — pads cut to shape leak bypass around the edges.
