All problemsCloudy water
Cloudiness is almost always one of three things: a bacterial bloom in a young filter, disturbed substrate dust, or overfeeding feeding the bloom.
What actually helps
- Test ammonia and nitrite first — a bacterial bloom in a new tank means the filter is still catching up, so feed less and wait it out.
- In established tanks, cut feeding in half for a few days and siphon the substrate; most hazes starve within a week.
- Do not swap or wash filter media under tap water during a bloom — that restarts the cycle you are waiting for.
- A flocculant clumps fine particles so the filter can catch them, but it works WITH a filter, not instead of one.
