FishHub SA — built by hobbyists, for hobbyists and the shops that serve them.

FishHub SA exists because buying fish in South Africa was broken — not dramatically, not headline-news broken, but death-by-a-thousand-WhatsApp-messages broken. You would see a photo of a fish in a group, DM the seller, forget the price by Thursday, drive to a shop that sold out yesterday, and post “WTB neon tetras JHB” into the void again.
We are not a faceless marketplace conglomerate. FishHub is built by hobbyists who keep tanks in the same hard tap water you do, who order shrimp by courier and sweat DOA windows, who know that McMerwe and the corner LFS and the KZN breeder in a garage all matter. We built the site we wished existed when we started.
Who built FishHub
A solo founder in South Africa — developer and aquarist — with help from shop owners who beta-tested listings, breeders who complained about the right things, and early users who set the first thousand alerts. No venture board, no Silicon Valley playbook. Shipping features between water changes and courier unpackings.
We are based in the same time zone as you. Support is a WhatsApp message, not a ticket queue in another hemisphere. When load-shedding hits, we feel it too.
Why — the WhatsApp chaos problem
SA fish commerce lives in groups. That is not inherently bad — community is the hobby. But groups are terrible at search, price memory, stock certainty, and trust persistence. A trusted seller post from March is buried by April. A beginner asks the same cycling question twelve times in a week. Shops post stock photos that vanish in the scroll before Gauteng buyers even see them.
FishHub does not try to kill groups. We try to be the layer underneath: searchable stock, persistent shop pages, species care that Google can find, verified sellers that survive the scroll, and alerts that ping you when the fish you wanted actually lists. Post once in a group with a FishHub link — everyone gets structure.
What we are building toward
Three fronts, one habit: when a South African thinks fish, they think FishHub first.
- Market — own discovery and price. Search every shop at once. Accumulate price history nobody can backfill later.
- Community — own trust and the posting habit. Reviews, verified sellers, shareable links that groups actually want to use.
- Commerce — own the rails for businesses. Index supply for free; shops depend on the demand we route; hobbyists never pay for alerts.

FishHub starts as a side project — one hobbyist tired of screenshotting Facebook posts, losing track of prices, and asking "anyone seen red rams in JHB?" in three different groups.

Species directory & listings
We ship a searchable species library with SA-relevant care data, shop profiles, and price comparison across provinces. The first shops claim their profiles.

Stock alerts go live
Free unlimited wishlists and alerts — hobbyists stop manually refreshing shop websites. Demand data starts showing what SA actually wants to buy.

Verified Sellers & sync
Structured trust replaces scattered group pinned lists. Shop stock sync indexes public inventory (facts only — no scraped images) so buyers search every shop at once.

Community & seller tools
Tank simulator, shop dashboards, demand insights, and programmatic landing pages for shrimp, guppies, bettas, and more — built mobile-first for how SA actually buys fish.

What we are building toward
The default infrastructure of the SA aquarium world — discovery, trust, and commerce in one place. Forums decline on mobile; we publish the guides they used to host.
